Counsels to use 0845 numbers
After quite a few complaints from customers why counsels are are using 0845 numbers for customer contact, the counsels were pressurized to have a freephone number such as 0800 numbers or any other connection that doesn’t charge the caller. Since 0845 number are local rate number, the caller is charged according to its proximity.
The government body has recommended these counsels to shift to other connection because it was cheaper for people to call to them. But after studies been conducted by officials, the counsels are recommended to stick with the 0845 number until the emerging position on charging becomes clearer and review the situation in a year's time. The report has considered pros and cons of using 0845 number for the counsels and it is felt that 0845 number provides a 'sound option' for customers and the council alike. However, the council is also being urged to provide an alternative single geographic number on its website for any callers who want to use it.
The reason for using 0845 number for counsels is that it provides wide range of services. Besides this BT has made 0845 call free for its 14 million subscribers, thus shifting to other connection will create public confusion and agitation.
Another reason for staying with 0844 numbers is that it doesn’t cost the council in using it; instead counsels can earn some rebate which can be used for more public community services. Whereas switching to another connection such as 03 number would mean an additional £38,000 a year bill for the authority. Providing a free phone service for all callers would incur additional £144,000 a year and would be difficult for counsels to manage within allotted budget.
